Guidelines and Restrictions

10 Gallon / 50 Pound Limit

Transportation law prohibits you from transporting more than 10 liquid gallons or 50 solid pounds of hazardous waste in your vehicle. If you have more than these limits or you are not sure how much material you have, please follow these tips:

  • Base your estimate of the amount of material you have on the actual product in the container, not the number or size of the containers.
  • Make one appointment for each waste limit and then make additional appointments for the remainder of your materials (e.g. 20 gallons, make 2 appointments for 10 gallons each).
  • Have a friend, relative, or neighbor bring the excess materials in a separate vehicle.

5 Gallon Container Limit

We can only accept containers that are 5 gallons or less in size. Please follow these tips:

  • Get containers that are 5-gallons in size, such as a paint bucket with a lid.
  • Transfer waste from larger containers into 5-gallon containers.

If you need assistance, please email or call (650) 372-6200.

At the Collection Site - DO NOT GET OUT OF YOUR VEHICLE

State law requires you to remain in your vehcile while at one of the county collection sites or events. Our staff will check you in and direct you to the material receiving area. At the receiving area, another staff member will be responsible for removing your materials from your vehicle.
